The First Deputy Speaker of the 8th Parliament of the 4th Republic, will join scores of book-loving Ghanaians to mark this year’s edition of the Ghana Reads Festival.

Mr. Joseph Osei-Owusu will grace the occasion with his presence as the Guest Speaker.

Ghana Reads is a reading festival that focuses on providing interactive teaching and educational resources to improve literacy among students in Ghana.

The initiative by World Reader Ghana in partnership with the Ghana Reads Initiative and the Accra-Center for National Culture is aimed at bringing all book-lovers together as to instill in them a habit of reading. This will be the 4th edition of the initiative.

A series of activities have been held as warm up in anticipation of the main event which is to come off on Wednesday, October 6, 2021.

These activities include visits to selected community libraries, reading activities using the Book Smart app, among others.

The main event will also be characterized by various sessions such as the opening ceremony which will be to formally launch the event.

Here, formal speeches and submissions from guests and dignitaries present will be delivered.

This will be followed by the ‘Up, Girl! Read and Converse’ session where the Director of Public Relations at Parliament Miss Kate Addo will be reading Ama Atta Aidoo’s ‘The Girl Who Can.’

The next session will be led by the Sanitation Minister, Mrs Cecelia Abena Dapaah, who will read a book by Adwensa Publications titled ‘Nii Noi, the Sanitation Officer.’

Each reading session will be followed by a conversation about the book in focus and lessons that can be learnt from them.

Further, exciting activities including an E-Sport session where students will be made to read and after that play video games in line with the saying ‘All work and no play; makes Jack a dull boy’ will be held.

There will also be poetry recitals.

Other prominent officials who will grace the occasion with their presence include a former Head of the Theatre Department at the University of Ghana, Dr Daniel Adjei, the country representative of UNESCO, representatives from the Ghana Association of Writers, Ghana Publishers Association, Ghana Library Authority, Ghana Book Development Council, and the Pan African Writers Association, among others.

The event will be held at the Accra Center for National Culture from 10 am to 2 pm.
